Root Canal Therapy in Carmel, IN
Despite its reputation, a modern root canal is a comfortable procedure whose whole purpose is to end pain, not cause it.
No dental phrase carries more unearned dread than “root canal.” Here is the truth of it: a root canal is the procedure that ends the toothache, saves your natural tooth, and spares you the implant or bridge you would otherwise need. Modern root canal treatment is a relatively comfortable procedure, and at a practice built on Fear-Less Dentistry, comfort is not left to chance.
What a root canal actually is
Think of your tooth like a house. The outside is hard, protective enamel. Inside is a soft core called the dental pulp, holding nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, running from the crown down to the tips of the roots. When that pulp becomes inflamed or infected, the tooth hurts, and the infection will not resolve on its own.
Root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment, repairs and saves the tooth. The inflamed nerve and pulp are removed, the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned, and the space is sealed. The tooth stays; the pain goes.
How the trouble starts
Pulp damage usually traces back to deep decay from an untreated cavity, repeated dental work on the same tooth, a crack or chip, or an injury, even one that left no visible mark.
The signs are worth knowing: severe pain when chewing or pressing, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, a darkening tooth, swollen or tender gums nearby, or a persistent pimple on the gums. Any of these deserves a call, and tooth pain is exactly the kind of problem we see same-day whenever possible. Walk-ins are welcome.
What the visit is like
You will be thoroughly numb before anything begins, and patients who have had trouble getting numb elsewhere get deliberate, unhurried attention here. Most patients describe the procedure as no more eventful than a large filling, and the relief afterward as immediate. A crown often follows to protect the restored tooth for the long run.
If a tooth has been talking to you, do not wait for it to shout. Smile Arts Dental provides root canal therapy for patients from Carmel, Westfield, Zionsville, and north Indianapolis. Call (317) 575-1995.
Common questions
Is a root canal painful? +
A modern root canal is done under thorough numbing and most patients compare it to getting a large filling. The pain people associate with root canals is usually the toothache before treatment. The procedure is what ends that pain.
How do I know if I need a root canal? +
Warning signs include severe pain when chewing or pressing on a tooth, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the trigger is gone, a darkening tooth, swollen or tender nearby gums, or a persistent pimple on the gums. Any of these deserves a prompt call, and tooth pain is seen same-day here whenever possible.
What happens to the tooth afterward? +
The tooth stays in place and keeps working. Because treatment removes the nerve and pulp, the tooth can become more brittle over time, so a crown is often recommended to protect it for the long run. Dr. Balaban will tell you whether your tooth needs one.
What if I am too anxious for a procedure like this? +
You are describing this practice's most common patient. Comfort planning is built into every root canal here, unhurried numbing gets special attention, and sedation options are available when technique alone is not enough.
