Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation in Carmel, IN
Receding gums corrected through a pinhole-sized opening, without the scalpels and sutures of traditional grafting.
Gum recession sneaks up over years. Teeth start to look longer, the exposed roots grow sensitive to cold, and the smile reads older than the face around it. For a long time the only fix was traditional gum grafting, effective but surgical: tissue cut from the palate, sutured over the recession, and weeks of tender recovery. The Chao Pinhole technique changed that equation.
How the pinhole technique works
Instead of cutting and stitching, the Chao Pinhole method works through a small entry point in the gum, about the size of a pinhole. Through it, the existing gum tissue is gently loosened and guided back down over the exposed roots, where it is held in place with collagen strips placed through the same tiny opening. No scalpel incisions in the traditional sense, no sutures, and no tissue harvested from the roof of your mouth.
For patients, the differences are practical: discomfort is minimal, recovery is measured in days rather than weeks, and multiple teeth can often be treated in a single visit. The cosmetic change is immediate; most patients see their new gumline before they leave the chair.
Why treat recession at all
Receded gums are not only cosmetic. Exposed roots are softer than enamel, more vulnerable to decay and abrasion, and often uncomfortably sensitive. Recession is also frequently a symptom of gum disease or an aggressive brushing habit, both worth addressing at the same time, which is why this treatment lives alongside our periodontal therapy.
A rare offering, close to home
Relatively few practices in the Indianapolis area offer the pinhole technique. Dr. Balaban brings it together with more than fifteen years of restorative experience and membership in the Perio Institute of Implantology, and the same Fear-Less approach to comfort that shapes everything else here.
If your gums have been retreating, ask about pinhole rejuvenation at your next visit. Smile Arts Dental serves patients from Carmel, Westfield, Zionsville, and greater Indianapolis. Call (317) 575-1995.
