The Importance of Regular Dental Visits, Even After a Long Gap

Nobody plans to fall out of the habit of dental visits. A busy stretch at work, a move, a change in insurance, and suddenly the last cleaning was a year or three ago. If that sounds like you, take a breath. You are describing our most common new patient, and the visit that gets you back on track is easier than you think.

Why the gap matters, and the guilt does not

Regular cleanings do a job no home routine can. Brushing and flossing keep plaque in check, but once plaque hardens into tartar, no amount of brushing will remove it. Only a professional cleaning can. Left in place, tartar build-up can lead to bacterial infection and gum disease, which is why regular visits are essential to preventing tartar, cavities, possible tooth loss, and gum trouble before any of them gets a foothold.

The longer the gap, the more time tartar has had to accumulate. That is a reason to come in, not a verdict on your habits. Problems caught early are simpler to treat, and a cleaning after a long break clears the slate so your home routine can do its part again.

What a comeback visit actually looks like

There is no lecture waiting for you here. The visit starts with a conversation about where things stand and what you want, and the exam and cleaning proceed at your pace. If part of what kept you away was dread rather than a calendar, say so when you book. Fear-Less Dentistry is the idea this practice is organized around: we ask what makes visits hard before anyone reclines a chair, we agree on a stop signal before we begin, and we explain as much or as little as you prefer.

For patients who need more support than technique alone, sedation options are available. Dr. Balaban is a member of DOCS, the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, and fearful patients are a regular part of his week, not an exception to it. If anxiety is the main thing standing between you and the phone, we wrote a separate post for you.
