Fluoride tends to get filed under things for children, somewhere between training wheels and spelling tests. That is a shame, because it is a naturally occurring mineral that protects tooth enamel, helps damaged enamel rebuild itself, and lowers the risk of tooth decay at any age. Adults benefit from it too, and some adults benefit from it a great deal.
What fluoride actually does
Cavities begin with bacteria. The bacteria in your mouth feed on sugars from food and drink, and as they do, they release acids that wear away the mineral structure of your enamel. Dentists call that damage demineralization, and it is the first step toward decay.
Fluoride works on the other side of that equation. It helps your enamel repair the early damage those acids cause, a process called remineralization. Caught early enough, a weakened spot on a tooth can firm back up before it ever becomes a cavity.
Is it safe? Yes, in appropriate dosages. Fluoride occurs naturally, and decades of research have consistently shown that it fights cavities and reduces the risk of tooth decay. It is one of the most studied tools in dentistry, and one of the gentlest.
Which adults benefit most
Most adults get a baseline amount of fluoride from drinking water and from fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash. Pairing that daily habit with regular checkups matters, and we have written more about why home care and dental visits work together.
For some adults, the baseline is not enough. It is worth talking with us about at-home or in-office fluoride treatments if you:
- Have a medical condition, or take a medication, that causes dry mouth
- Have gum disease or are at risk for it
- Have a history of tooth decay and cavities
- Have tooth damage from an injury, an illness, or medication side effects
- Have crowns, bridges, braces, or dentures
- Know your oral hygiene routine has slipped
None of those items is a reason for embarrassment. They are simply risk factors, and knowing yours is the first step toward protecting your teeth.
What an in-office treatment involves
If you are picturing something involved, relax. An in-office fluoride treatment is one of the easiest things that happens in a dental chair, which makes it a comfortable fit with our Fear-Less Dentistry approach.
Dr. Balaban applies fluoride to your teeth as a gel or paste, or with a small mouth tray. It stays on your teeth for five to ten minutes, then we rinse it away. The treatment is quick, painless, and effective, and you walk out with enamel that is better defended than when you walked in.
Whether a treatment makes sense for you is a judgment call, and it starts with a proper look. During a comprehensive exam, Dr. Balaban assesses your individual risk of tooth decay and tells you honestly whether fluoride treatments would help.
Schedule a checkup and find out where you stand
If you cannot remember the last time you had a dental exam, a professional cleaning, or a fluoride treatment, that is exactly the right moment to book one. New patients can start with our $79 exam and X-ray special, which gives Dr. Balaban everything he needs to assess your decay risk.
