The Ease and Effectiveness of Invisible Braces

If you have been weighing the pros and cons of braces as an adult, the two questions that usually matter most are simple. Will everyone see them, and will they hurt? Invisible braces answer both gently. When they are fitted correctly and worn as directed, they straighten teeth as effectively as traditional orthodontia, without brackets on display and without the frequent adjustment appointments that make conventional braces uncomfortable.

What counts as an invisible brace

The term covers a few different approaches. Some orthodontic practices offer clear ceramic brackets, which work like traditional braces but blend in with the teeth, or so-called inside braces mounted behind the teeth where they cannot be seen. The option we provide at Smile Arts Dental is the clear dental aligner: a soft, flexible, removable tray that fits over the upper and lower teeth and gently shifts them into alignment. You can read about our specific system on the CandidPro clear aligners page.

How clear aligners actually work

Each set of aligners is manufactured with computerized technology to match the exact shape, size, and specifications of your own upper and lower teeth. Because the fit is custom, the trays sit comfortably in place without slipping, moving around, or irritating your gums or tongue. Most people stop noticing them within days.

The straightening happens in small, planned steps. As your treatment progresses, you move on to a new set of aligners, and each set shifts your teeth slowly and gently toward their final position. There are no wires to tighten, so there is nothing to dread between visits.

The trays come out whenever you need them to. You remove your aligners to eat, to brush and floss normally, and to clean the trays themselves. For the treatment to stay on schedule, most aligners should be worn between 16 and 22 hours per day.

Do invisible braces really work?

Yes. When aligners are fitted and manufactured correctly, worn properly, and cared for appropriately, they are as effective as traditional braces. They can correct misaligned or crooked teeth, overbites, overcrowding, and spaces or gaps between teeth.

The honest caveat is the wear schedule. Because the trays are removable, the results depend on you actually wearing them. Aligners reward commitment; patients who keep them in for the recommended hours each day see the results their treatment plan predicted.

Who is a good candidate

Clear aligners are recommended for teens and adults. They should not be used while any baby teeth remain in the mouth, so younger children need to wait. Beyond that, you may be a good candidate if you have an alignment problem the trays can correct and you can commit to wearing them up to 22 hours a day and caring for them properly. If you are curious how our system compares to the category as a whole, we wrote a separate post on why CandidPro is worth considering.
