5 Reasons You Need Dental Teeth Cleaning

A professional cleaning is the most routine appointment in dentistry, and for anxious patients it is often the visit that makes everything else feel possible. If dental visits of any kind are hard for you, start with our Fear-Less Dentistry approach and know that a cleaning asks very little of you. You recline, you breathe, and a hygienist does careful work at your pace.

It is a visit worth keeping, every six months. Brushing and flossing at home handle the surface, but a professional cleaning goes deeper, clearing away the bacteria buildup on your teeth and gums that a toothbrush cannot reach. And your mouth does not keep its problems to itself: regular cleanings may help lower the risk of stroke and heart disease, while ongoing poor oral hygiene has been linked to bone loss, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers.

What actually happens during a cleaning

Most cleaning worry comes from not knowing the steps. Here they are, in order:

  • A physical exam. Your visit starts with a visual inspection of your teeth and gums, so nothing that follows is a surprise.
  • Plaque and tartar removal. The hygienist clears away the sticky film and the hardened deposits that home brushing leaves behind.
  • A high-powered brushing. An electric toothbrush and polishing paste clean the surfaces of each tooth more thoroughly than a morning routine can.
  • Expert flossing. A professional pass between every tooth reaches the spots your own flossing tends to miss.

That is the whole procedure. The appointment is also a good moment to ask questions; your cleaning is an open invitation to get tips on caring for your teeth at home. If you would be new to our office, we wrote a full walkthrough of what a first visit looks like.

Five reasons the visit is worth it

  1. It brightens your smile. A cleaning removes coffee and tobacco stains and leaves your teeth polished, without the risks that come with over-the-counter whiteners.
  2. It freshens your breath. Good brushing eliminates most mouth odor, but some deep-seated bacteria are hard to remove on your own. A thorough cleaning clears out the bacteria that cause bad breath.
  3. It prevents cavities. Plaque is acidic, and left in place it destroys tooth enamel. It is the leading cause of tooth decay, and the combination of regular brushing and professional cleaning removes it.
  4. It helps prevent tooth loss. Plaque buildup does not stop at decay. Below the gum line it drives gum disease, and gum disease is how teeth are lost. A cleaning removes plaque that has worked its way deeper than a brush can go.
  5. It doubles as a checkup. Every cleaning comes with an exam, and a six-month rhythm lets Dr. Balaban track changes in your mouth over time and catch small problems while they are still small.
